Snoopy, Come Home is an animated musical comedy-drama film from 1972. It was directed by Bill Melendez and written by Charles M. Schulz. The movie is based on the popular Peanuts comic strip.

This film is special because it's the first time Woodstock appeared on screen. He had first shown up in the comic strip in 1967. The music for the movie was created by the Sherman Brothers. They are famous for writing songs for many Disney films. These include Mary Poppins (1964) and The Jungle Book (1967). The movie was released on August 9, 1972. Even though many people liked it, the film did not make much money.

Snoopy's Adventure Begins

The story starts with Snoopy and the Peanuts gang at the beach. Snoopy promises to meet Peppermint Patty there the next day. Later, Charlie Brown gets annoyed because Snoopy is late coming home. Snoopy takes off his collar, which makes Charlie Brown even more frustrated.

The next day, Snoopy tries to go back to the beach. But a new rule says "No Dogs Allowed." This rule becomes a funny running gag throughout the movie. Peppermint Patty thinks Snoopy stood her up. Snoopy then gets kicked out of a library for being too noisy. He also gets into a playful fight with Linus over his blanket. Later, he even beats Lucy in a boxing match.

A Letter from Lila

Snoopy receives a letter from a girl named Lila. She has been in the hospital and wants Snoopy to visit her. Snoopy immediately leaves with Woodstock to see Lila. Charlie Brown has no idea who Lila is. Linus investigates and finds out that Lila was Snoopy's first owner. Charlie Brown is very surprised to hear this news.

Challenges on the Journey

On their way to Lila, Snoopy and Woodstock face many signs that say "No Dogs Allowed." They see these signs on buses, trains, and other places. A man named Thurl Ravenscroft sings deep notes each time they see a sign.

Snoopy and Woodstock are briefly adopted by a girl named Clara. She loves animals very much. Clara ties Snoopy up and locks Woodstock in a cage. Clara's mother says she can keep Snoopy. Clara is very excited and calls Snoopy "Rex." She bathes him and dresses him up.

Clara tries to have a tea party with Snoopy. But Snoopy escapes and tries to call for help. Clara catches him and ties him up again. She tells Snoopy that he needs to go to the vet for shots. Snoopy causes a commotion at the vet and escapes. He goes back to Clara's house and frees Woodstock. Clara chases them, but they get away. That evening, Snoopy and Woodstock camp out. They play football and make music while cooking dinner.

Reaching Lila and a Tough Choice

Snoopy finally reaches the hospital. But again, "No Dogs Allowed" signs stop him. Birds are not allowed either. Snoopy tries to sneak into Lila's room and succeeds on his second try. He stays with Lila, and she tells him his visit helped her get better.

Lila asks Snoopy to come live with her. Snoopy is unsure, but decides to go back to Charlie Brown. However, when he sees Lila crying from her hospital window, he runs back to her. Lila thinks this means he wants to live with her. Snoopy agrees to go with her, but first, he needs to go home to say goodbye.

Saying Goodbye

Snoopy writes a letter to give away his belongings. Linus gets his croquet and chess sets. Schroeder receives Snoopy's record collection. Charlie Brown, Snoopy's owner, only gets Snoopy's best wishes.

The kids throw Snoopy a big, sad going-away party. Everyone brings a gift. When it's Charlie Brown's turn to speak, he is too sad to say anything. After giving Snoopy his present, Charlie Brown cries. Snoopy cries too. The rest of the gang, even Lucy, starts crying when Schroeder plays "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" on his piano.

Snoopy's Return

After Snoopy leaves, Charlie Brown cannot sleep or eat. The next day, Snoopy arrives at Lila's apartment building. He sees a sign that says, "No dogs allowed in building." Snoopy is very happy because this gives him a reason to go back to Charlie Brown.

Lila arrives and introduces Snoopy to her pet cat. Snoopy shows Lila the "No Dogs Allowed" sign. Lila has no choice but to let Snoopy leave. Snoopy happily returns to Charlie Brown and the others.

Back home, the children are overjoyed to see Snoopy. They carry him to his dog house. Snoopy then uses his typewriter to demand that the kids return the items he gave them. This makes the kids annoyed. Charlie Brown reads his document and says, "Mine says, that since he gave me nothing, I owe him nothing." Lucy gets angry and tells Charlie Brown that Snoopy is his dog. The gang leaves Charlie Brown and Snoopy alone. The movie ends with Woodstock typing out the end credits as Snoopy tells him what to write.
