Amazing Animals of Snowy River
This park is super important for protecting rare animals. It helps keep them safe in their natural homes.
Brush-tailed Rock Wallaby
The park is one of the last places where the endangered Brush-tailed Rock Wallaby lives. These wallabies are very special. They are hard to count because they live in rough, rocky areas. Their numbers are very small.
Other Rare Animals
Besides the wallaby, 29 other rare or threatened species live here. These include:
- The Long-footed Potoroo, a small marsupial.
- The Spotted Quoll (also called Tiger Quoll), a cool spotted hunter.
- The Giant Burrowing Frog, a large frog that lives underground.
- The Eastern She-oak Skink, a type of lizard.
Little River Gorge: Victoria's Deepest Canyon
The Little River Gorge is a truly amazing spot. It is the deepest gorge in all of Victoria! The Little River flows down 610 meters from a high area called the Wulgulmerang plateau. It travels about 14 kilometers before joining the Snowy River. At this point, it is 122 meters above sea level.
McKillops Bridge: Adventure Starts Here
McKillops Road marks the northern edge of the park. The Alpine National Park is just north of this road. Be careful if you visit, as the road is steep and winding. It is not good for caravans or large trucks.
At McKillops Bridge, the road crosses the Snowy River. This is a great spot for outdoor fun!
- There is a camping site nearby.
- You can find excellent places for swimming.
- It is the perfect starting point for canoe and raft trips. You can explore the wild gorges downstream from here.
- Two walking tracks also start here: the 18-kilometer Silver Mine Walking Track and the shorter Snowy River Trail.
