Solarte Island, also known as Nancy's Cay, is a small island in Panama. It is about 8 square kilometers (3 square miles) in size. You can find it just 1 mile east of Bocas del Toro town. This island is part of the Bocas del Toro Province.
Life on Solarte Island
Around 200 people live on Solarte Island. Most of them are from the Ngöbe Buglé community. They mainly work as fishers. Life on the island is simple. The community does not have electricity or a telephone system. They get their fresh water from a well.
History of Hospital Point
A long time ago, a medical center was built on Solarte Island. This happened in 1899. The United Fruit Company built it on a hill on the west side of the island. It was used to help people who were sick with diseases like yellow fever and malaria.
This medical center became known as Hospital Point. However, in 1920, the hospital was closed. Its services were moved to a different town called Almirante.
