Soledad Becerril, born on August 16, 1944, in Madrid, Spain, is a well-known Spanish politician. She has been a member of the Spanish Congress of Deputies for many years. Soledad Becerril belongs to the People's Party (PP).
In 1981, she made history by becoming the first female Government Minister in Spain in nearly 50 years. Later, she also became the first woman to serve as Mayor of Seville. Soledad Becerril is married to Rafael Atienza y Medina, who is the 8th Marquis of Salvatierra.

Early Political Steps
Soledad Becerril studied philosophy and English at the University of Madrid. After her studies, she worked as a teacher at the University of Seville. She is married and has two children.
She started her political journey in 1974. She joined a group called the Federation of Democratic and Liberal parties. Later, she became part of the Democratic Party of Andalusia (PDA). In 1977, the PDA joined with other parties to form the Union of the Democratic Centre (UCD). This new group won the first democratic election in Spain after a long time. Soledad Becerril was chosen as a UCD representative for Seville Province and was re-elected in 1979.
Minister of Culture
In December 1981, a new Prime Minister named Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo chose Soledad Becerril for an important job. She was appointed Minister of Culture. This was a very special moment because she became the first female Minister in Spain since 1936. This made her only the second woman in Spanish history to hold such a high government position.
Joining the People's Party
After the 1982 General Election, Soledad Becerril, like many others from the UCD party, lost her seat. The UCD party then broke up in 1983. She later joined the People's Party (PP).
In 1989, she returned to the Spanish Congress as a PP representative. She was re-elected in 1996 and again in 2000. In 2004, she was elected to the Spanish Senate, where she served one term until 2008. In 2008, she went back to the Congress of Deputies.
Mayor of Seville
Soledad Becerril also worked as a local council member in Seville. She was the Deputy Mayor from 1991 to 1995. Then, from 1995 to 1999, she served as the Mayor of Seville. She was the first woman ever to be the Mayor of this important city.
In 1998, something unusual happened while she was traveling. Her plane was going to Switzerland to help Seville try to host the 2008 Olympics. The plane was briefly taken over at Valencia Airport, but the person involved gave up without hurting anyone.
Defender of the People (Ombudsman)
On June 29, 2012, Soledad Becerril was given a new and very important role. She was appointed as the Defender of the People. This job involves protecting the rights of citizens and making sure the government acts fairly. She served in this role until July 21, 2017.
