Soledad Becerril (born August 16, 1944, in Madrid, Spain) is a Spanish politician. She has held many important roles in her country's government. She was the first woman to be a government minister in Spain in nearly 50 years. She also became the first female Mayor of Seville. Soledad Becerril is a member of the People's Party (PP).

Early Political Life
Soledad Becerril studied philosophy and English at the University of Madrid. After graduating, she worked as a teacher at the University of Seville. In 1974, she started her political journey by joining a group called the Federation of Democratic and Liberal parties. Later, she joined the Democratic Party of Andalusia.
Joining the Union of the Democratic Centre
In May 1977, her party joined with others to form the Union of the Democratic Centre (UCD). This group won the first democratic election in Spain after a long period without democracy. Soledad Becerril was elected to the Spanish Congress of Deputies, representing the Seville Province. She was re-elected in 1979.
Minister of Culture Role
In December 1981, the Prime Minister, Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo, chose Soledad Becerril to be the Minister of Culture. This was a very important moment. She became the first woman to hold a minister position in Spain since 1936, almost 50 years earlier. As Minister of Culture, she was in charge of things like art, music, and historical sites in Spain.
Joining the People's Party
After the 1982 General Election, the UCD party lost many seats and later broke up. Soledad Becerril then joined the People's Party (PP). In 1989, she returned to the Spanish Congress as a PP representative. She was re-elected in 1996 and 2000.
Serving in the Senate
In 2004, she was elected to the Spanish Senate, which is another part of Spain's parliament. She served one term there until 2008. After that, she returned to the Congress of Deputies.
Mayor of Seville
Soledad Becerril also worked in local government in Seville. She was the Deputy Mayor from 1991 to 1995. Then, from 1995 to 1999, she served as the Mayor of Seville. She was the first woman ever to be the Mayor of this important city.
Unexpected Event During Mayorship
In 1998, while traveling for work, her plane had an unexpected event at Valencia Airport. A person on the plane caused a disturbance, but thankfully, they surrendered without anyone getting hurt.
Defender of the People (Ombudsman)
On June 29, 2012, Soledad Becerril was appointed as the Defender of the People. This is a special role where she helped citizens who had problems with the government or public services. She served in this position until July 21, 2017.
