Solesmes is a small village, also known as a commune, located in north-western France. It is part of the Sarthe department and the Pays-de-la-Loire region.
Solesmes is very close to the town of Sablé-sur-Sarthe. Most of the land in Solesmes is used for farming. The village is famous for its two important religious buildings called abbeys.
What is Solesmes Known For?
Solesmes is most famous for the Abbey of St Peter. This abbey was founded a very long time ago in the year 1010. It is a Benedictine abbey, which means the monks who live there follow special rules from Saint Benedict.
History of St Peter's Abbey
The Abbey of St Peter faced a difficult time in 1791. During the French Revolution, a group called the National Constituent Assembly closed many religious places. Solesmes Abbey was one of them.
However, the abbey was reopened in 1833 by a person named Dom Prosper Guéranger. He worked hard to bring the Benedictine monks back to Solesmes.
St Cecilia's Abbey
Besides St Peter's Abbey, there is also a second abbey in Solesmes. This one is for women and is called St Cecilia's. Both abbeys are important centers for religious life and history in the area.
