Solidago rupestris is a special type of goldenrod plant. People often call it the rock goldenrod or riverbank goldenrod. It's a beautiful flowering plant that belongs to the sunflower family.
What is the Rock Goldenrod?
The rock goldenrod is a plant that can grow quite tall, sometimes up to 150 centimeters (about 5 feet). It's a perennial herb, which means it's a plant that lives for many years. It spreads out by using special underground stems called rhizomes. These rhizomes help new plants grow nearby.
How Does It Grow?
The leaves of the rock goldenrod can be up to 12 centimeters (about 4.8 inches) long. They grow along the main stem of the plant, not just in a bunch at the bottom. When it blooms, one plant can produce as many as 900 small, bright yellow flowers! These flowers grow in a showy, branching shape, making the plant look very pretty.
Where Does It Live?
This plant is native to North America. Today, you can find the rock goldenrod growing in the eastern parts of the United States. It lives in states like Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. It used to grow in Indiana and Pennsylvania too. However, it seems these plants are not found there anymore. The rock goldenrod loves to grow mostly along the banks of rivers.
