Somendra Nath Mitra (born December 31, 1941 – died July 30, 2020), also known as Somen Mitra, was an important Indian politician. He was a member of the Lok Sabha, which is like the main parliament of India. He was elected from the Diamond Harbour area in West Bengal in 2009. At that time, he was part of the Trinamool Congress party.
Somen Mitra also served in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. This is the state-level parliament for West Bengal. He represented the Sealdah area from 1972 to 2006. He was the leader of the Indian National Congress party in West Bengal.

Early Life and Education
Somen Mitra was born on December 31, 1941. His birthplace was Katorah in the Bengal Presidency of British India. He studied at Bangabasi College. Later, he went to the University of Calcutta. There, he earned degrees in science (B.Sc.) and law (LL.B.).
Political Journey
Somen Mitra had a long career in politics. He was known for his strong connection to the Indian National Congress party.
Serving in the Assembly
He first became a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1972. He continued to be elected from the Sealdah constituency for many years. His time in the Assembly lasted until 2006.
Role in Parliament
In 2009, Somen Mitra was elected to the Lok Sabha. This is one of the two houses of the Indian Parliament. He represented the Diamond Harbour constituency. During this time, he was a member of the All India Trinamool Congress party.
Changing Parties
In July 2008, he left the Indian National Congress. He then started his own political party. It was called the Pragatisheel Indira Congress. In October 2009, his new party joined with the All India Trinamool Congress. However, in January 2014, he decided to rejoin his original party, the Indian National Congress. Before rejoining, he resigned from his position as a Member of Parliament.
Leading the Congress Party
Somen Mitra became the president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee twice. This is a very important leadership role for the Congress party in West Bengal. He served as president from 1992 to 1998. He took on this role again on September 22, 2018. He continued to serve as president until his death.

Somen Mitra was married to Sikha Mitra. They had a son named Rohan Mitra.
Legacy
Somen Mitra passed away on July 30, 2020, due to a Cardiac arrest. He was a respected figure in West Bengal politics. He was known for his long service and leadership roles.
