A Look Back: Somerdale's History
The post office in Somerdale first opened its doors in 1887, serving the people who lived and worked there. Somerdale began as a mining community. This means that the town grew because of a nearby mine, where many people worked to dig out valuable resources from the ground. In Somerdale's case, the main resource was coal. The Somerdale Coal Company was a big part of the community, providing jobs and helping the area grow. The time when the most coal was being dug out of the ground, known as "peak coal production," happened around the year 1900. After this period, the amount of coal mined slowly decreased.
