Albert Lee "Sonny" Davis, born on January 16, 1948, is a former American football player. He was a talented running back in the National Football League (NFL). Sonny also played college football for the Tennessee State Tigers.

Sonny Davis: A Football Journey

Growing Up in Tennessee

Sonny Davis was born and raised in Alcoa, Tennessee. He went to Alcoa High School. Sonny was a very special athlete. He was the first to play in integrated sports in his area, Blount County. During his junior and senior years, he was named All-County, All-State, and even All-American. This means he was one of the best players!

College Football Journey

Sonny Davis was one of the first African American players. He was recruited by the University of Tennessee. Another player, Lester McClain, was also recruited. However, Sonny decided to go to Tennessee State. He played four seasons for the Tennessee State Tigers. As a sophomore, he led his team with six touchdowns.

Playing Pro Football

In 1971, Sonny Davis was chosen in the 11th round of the 1971 NFL draft. The Philadelphia Eagles picked him. As a rookie, he ran for 163 yards. He also scored one touchdown on 47 carries. He caught 11 passes for 46 yards that season.

Later, from 1974 to 1975, Sonny played for The Hawaiians. This team was part of the World Football League.

Life After Football

After his football career, Sonny Davis became a teacher. He worked in the Camden School District. He later became a high school principal.
