Soon-Yi Previn (born Oh Soon-hee, Hangul: 오순희; c. October 8, 1970) is the adopted daughter of actress Mia Farrow and musician André Previn. She is married to filmmaker Woody Allen. The couple have two adopted children together.
Early Life and Education
Soon-Yi Previn was born in South Korea. Her original name was Oh Soon-Hee. She was found in Seoul on February 12, 1976. She was first placed in a local institution called Maria's House. When her family could not be found, she moved to St. Paul's Orphanage.
A legal birth document was created for her on December 28, 1976. It listed her birth date as October 8, 1970. A bone scan done when she was adopted showed her age was between five and seven. Previn has shared that as a young child, she lived on the streets. She sometimes found food from trash cans.
In 1978, Mia Farrow and her husband, André Previn, adopted Soon-Yi. They brought her to the United States. At that time, U.S. law allowed two visas for international adoptions per family. To help Soon-Yi come to the U.S., a special law was passed on May 15, 1978.
After the adoption, Mia Farrow wrote that Soon-Yi was learning English. She was also learning to read, write, play piano, dance ballet, and ride a horse. Farrow later said that Soon-Yi had learning difficulties when she was adopted. Rose Styron is Soon-Yi's godmother.
Mia Farrow's marriage to André Previn ended in 1979. She then started a long relationship with filmmaker Woody Allen. Allen later adopted two of Farrow's adopted children: Dylan Farrow and Moses Farrow. In 1987, Mia Farrow gave birth to Ronan Farrow, who is Allen's biological son.
Soon-Yi Previn finished school at Marymount School of New York in 1991. She then started college at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, in September 1991.
Previn later graduated from Drew University. She also earned a master's degree in special education from Columbia University.
During her teenage years, Previn appeared in some films. She had a small, uncredited role in Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters (1986). Mia Farrow also starred in this movie. Previn was an extra in the 1991 film Scenes from a Mall, which starred Allen. She also appeared with Allen in the documentary Wild Man Blues (1997).
Marriage and Family Life
Soon-Yi Previn has said that Woody Allen was never like a father figure to her. She also said they rarely spoke when she was a child. A court investigation found that before 1990, Previn and Allen had not often talked to each other. Previn said her first friendly talk with Allen happened when she was injured playing soccer in 11th grade. Allen offered to drive her to school. After this, in 1990, Previn started going to New York Knicks basketball games with Allen.
Previn and Allen got married in Venice, Italy, on December 22, 1997. She was 27 years old, and he was 62. They have adopted two daughters together. According to her friends, Previn has focused on being a wife and a stay-at-home mother. The Previn-Allen family lives in Manhattan on the Upper East Side.
