Sophie Thompson (born 20 January 1962) is a talented British actress. She has worked in many films, television shows, and theatre plays. She won a big award called the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1999 for her role in the musical Into the Woods. She has also been nominated for the Olivier Award five other times for her amazing performances.
Sophie Thompson has appeared in popular films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Persuasion (1995), Emma (1996), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010). On television, she played Stella Crawford in the BBC soap opera EastEnders (2006–2007) and Rosemary Piper in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street (2018).

Life and Work
Early Life and Training
Sophie Thompson was born on January 20, 1962, in London, England. She comes from a family of actors. Her mother is actress Phyllida Law, who was a presenter on the children's TV show Play School. Her father was actor Eric Thompson, who wrote and narrated the popular children's series The Magic Roundabout. Sophie's older sister is the well-known actress and screenwriter Emma Thompson.
Sophie started her acting career on television when she was just 15 years old. She starred in a BBC show called A Traveller in Time. After that, she went on to study acting at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, which is a famous drama school.
Film Roles
Sophie Thompson has appeared in many movies. Some of her most famous film roles include Four Weddings and a Funeral, a popular romantic comedy. She also appeared in Emma, based on the classic novel, and Gosford Park. In 2010, she had a role in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which is part of the magical wizarding world series.
Television Appearances
Sophie Thompson has had many roles on television. She starred alongside British comedians Alan Davies in Jonathan Creek and Lee Evans in So What Now?. She also played Agatha in an episode of The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes.
One of her most notable TV roles was playing Stella Crawford in the BBC soap opera EastEnders. Her character was a lawyer who became romantically involved with Phil Mitchell. She left the show in 2007. Later, in 2018, she joined another popular soap opera, Coronation Street, as Rosemary Piper.
Sophie also appeared in the BBC comedy series Big Top in 2009. In 2014, she won Celebrity MasterChef, a cooking competition show, beating other celebrities like Jodie Kidd. She also played Jan in an episode of the BBC comedy Inside No. 9.
Theatre Performances
Sophie Thompson has a very successful career in theatre. In 1988, she played Ophelia in a production of Hamlet, directed by Sir Derek Jacobi. Her future brother-in-law, Kenneth Branagh, played Hamlet in that show.
In 1996, she was nominated for an Olivier Award for her role as Amy in the musical Company. Her performance as the Baker's Wife in Into the Woods earned her the 1999 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical, which is a huge achievement in theatre.
She also received another Olivier nomination for her role as Kathy/Bev in Clybourne Park in 2011. More recently, she played Mrs Hardcastle in She Stoops To Conquer at the National Theatre. She also received an Olivier nomination for her role as Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls in 2016 and for Monica Reed in Present Laughter in 2019.
Writing Books
Besides acting, Sophie Thompson is also a writer. In 2015, she published a recipe book called My Family Kitchen. The following year, in 2016, her first children's book, Zoo Boy, was published.
Personal Life
Sophie Thompson married actor Richard Lumsden in 1995. They have two sons together, Ernie James Lumsden, born in 1997, and Walter Ernest Thompson, born in 2000.
Sophie is also involved in charity work. She has been an ambassador for Dan's Fund For Burns, a charity that helps people with burns. She also ran the London Marathon in 2010 to support CINI, a charity that helps families in India. She is also a patron for Firefly International, another charity.
