Sora is a small town and a municipality in Colombia. It is located in the Boyacá Department, which is part of the Central Boyacá Province. Sora is known for its beautiful landscapes and rich history.

This town is surrounded by other municipalities. To the north, it borders Motavita and Chíquiza. To the south, you'll find Cucaita and Samacá. On its east side, Sora is next to Motavita and Tunja, the capital city of the department. Finally, to the west, it shares borders with Sáchica and Chíquiza.

What Does the Name Sora Mean?

The name Sora comes from the ancient Chibcha language. This language was spoken by the Muisca people long ago. In Chibcha, the word "Sora" means "Devil worshipper."

Who Lived Here Before?

Before the Spanish arrived, the area where Sora is now was home to the Muisca people. The Muisca were an important group of indigenous people in Colombia. They lived in a loose group of communities called the Muisca Confederation. Sora was part of the lands ruled by the zaque, who was a powerful leader from a nearby city called Hunza.

When Was Sora Founded?

Modern Sora was officially founded a long time ago, on August 12, 1556. It was established by a person named Tomás Gualba Castellanos.
