History of Sorzano
The history of Sorzano can be traced back many centuries.
Early Mentions
One of the earliest mentions of Sorzano is found in the will of Queen Doña Estefanía. She was the wife of King García Sanchez III of Navarre, who was known as García from Nájera. In her will, Queen Estefanía left the town of Soricano (which is Sorzano today) to her son, Don Sancho. She also left him other villages, including Viguera.
Gifts to Monasteries
In the year 1070, the kings of Pamplona, Don Sancho and Doña Placencia, gave a part of their tithes to the monastery of Saints Cosme and Damián. Tithes were like a tax, usually a tenth of someone's income or produce, given to the church. These tithes came from their lands in Viguera, Hornos, Entedigone (Entrena), and half a mill in Solarana (Sorzano). All these villages were located near Logroño.
Becoming Independent
For a long time, Sorzano was part of the larger town of Nalda. However, in 1632, Sorzano became an independent municipality. This meant it could manage its own affairs.
