Sotirios G. Krokidas (Greek: Σωτήριος Γ. Κροκίδας) was an important Greek politician. He served as the interim Prime Minister of Greece in 1922. He was also a law professor in Athens. Krokidas was born in Sikyona in 1852 and passed away in Perigiali in 1924.
Who Was Sotirios Krokidas?
Sotirios Krokidas was born in Sikyona, a town in Corinth, in 1852. He studied law at the University of Athens. He even earned a special degree there. From 1881 to 1897, he worked as a professor. He taught commercial law at the Athens Law School.
In 1883, Krokidas was chosen to be the mayor of Sikyona. Later, in 1892, he became a deputy for Corinth. A deputy is like a representative in the government. From 1917 to 1920, he held a big job. He was the commander-in-chief of Crete.
Becoming Prime Minister
In 1922, Greece faced a tough time. The Greek army lost a major war against Turkey. This war is known as the Greco-Turkish War. After the defeat, the government changed. Greece entered a period of political trouble.
In September 1922, soldiers started a revolution. This happened first in Thessaloniki and then in Mytilene. A group of military leaders, led by Stylianos Gonatas, demanded changes. They wanted King Constantine I of Greece to leave his throne. The king did step down on September 26, 1922. The government at that time also resigned.
The revolutionary leaders chose Alexandros Zaimis to be the new Prime Minister. But Zaimis was not in Greece at the time. So, Sotirios Krokidas was chosen to be the temporary Prime Minister. He would serve until Zaimis could return.
Before Krokidas could arrive in Athens, another person briefly served. This was the Minister of the Army, Charalambis. He was Prime Minister for just one day. Then, on September 30, 1922, Krokidas officially became Prime Minister. He also served as the Minister of the Interior.
The Trial and Resignation
As Prime Minister, Krokidas was in charge of a special court. This court was called the Trial of the Six. It was a very important and difficult trial. The court looked into who was responsible for Greece's defeat in the war.
Three former Prime Ministers and the General who led the Greek troops were put on trial. The court decided they were responsible for the war's outcome. They faced severe consequences for their actions.
Krokidas resigned from his position on November 27, 1922. This was because of disagreements among his ministers. These disagreements were about the results of the Trial of the Six. After Krokidas resigned, Stylianos Gonatas took over. Gonatas was the leader of the revolutionary committee. The people found responsible in the trial were punished on November 28, 1922. Sotirios Krokidas passed away in 1924.
