The Sousa Archives and Center for American Music (SACAM) is a special place. It collects and keeps important items about American music. These items include old papers, recordings, and other historical things. SACAM is part of the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign's library system. It also works with the University of Illinois School of Music.

SACAM has many important collections. These include items from famous musicians like John Philip Sousa and Herbert L. Clarke. It also has collections from Albert Austin Harding, who was the first band-master at the University of Illinois. The center also keeps records of the University of Illinois Bands. SACAM's main goals are to collect, keep safe, and show these items to the public. They also help people study American music.

The center is located in the Harding Band Building. This building is on the campus of the University of Illinois. SACAM works like a museum. It has new exhibits each year. These exhibits cover fun topics like Baseball and Music, Women and Music, and Technology and Music. They also hold special events every November during Music Month in Champaign-Urbana. Anyone can visit and use the collections. The items are often used in displays and public programs.

What SACAM Collects

The center first opened in 1994. At that time, it received personal papers and other items from John Philip Sousa and Herbert L. Clarke. The University Bands had gotten Sousa's papers because Sousa and Harding knew each other. Since then, many more collections have been added.

SACAM now has over 50 different collections. These collections tell the story of American music. They also show the history of music and performing arts at the University of Illinois. Besides the Sousa, Clarke, and Harding materials, there are papers and music from many other artists. These include Harry Partch, Harry Begian, Salvatore Martirano, and Paul Bierley.

The center also has collections of musical instruments. These include instruments from Elbern Alkire and Carl Busch. There is also the Jack Linker Sound Recording Collection. SACAM also holds the records of the Association of Concert Bands. These records include files, concert programs, photos, and sound recordings.

Special Music Systems

SACAM is home to a unique electronic music system. It is called the Sal-Mar Construction. Salvatore Martirano created this system. It allowed him to mix human and computer-made sounds. He could also create music using both human and computer ideas.

The Claude Gordon Collection

The Sousa collection also includes the Claude Gordon Personal Papers and Music Instrument Collection. This collection covers the years 1888 to 1992. It has music and letters from Herbert L. Clarke and other famous trumpet players. It also includes teaching materials, publicity items, and performance contracts. Claude Gordon was a student of Herbert L. Clarke for a long time. He was a world-famous trumpet player, band leader, and teacher. He published many teaching methods that are used around the world.
