How American Music Began

The first music in the land we now call the United States was played by Native Americans. They had their own unique musical traditions.

Starting in the 1600s, many people came to the U.S. from other countries. Immigrants from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Germany, and France brought their own music styles and instruments. Also, enslaved people from West Africa brought their rich musical traditions. All these different cultures mixed together, creating new and exciting sounds.

African-American music traditions also influenced European-American styles. For example, jazz, blues, rock, country, and bluegrass all have African-American roots. The U.S. also has folk music and popular songs from many other groups. These include Ukrainian, Irish, Scottish, Polish, Hispanic, and Jewish communities.
