South Boardman is a small community in Michigan, USA. It is located in Kalkaska County. It's known as an "unincorporated community" and a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's a recognized area with its own population count, but it doesn't have its own city government like a big city would. In 2020, about 509 people lived here. South Boardman is part of Boardman Township.

About South Boardman's Location

South Boardman covers an area of about 3.34 square miles (8.64 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

It is located about 8 miles (13 kilometers) southwest of the town of Kalkaska. You can find it along U.S. Route 131. South Boardman has its own post office, which uses the ZIP Code 49680.

A Look Back at South Boardman's History

South Boardman began to grow because of the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad. This railroad was built through the area. In 1874, a man named Hamilton Stone and his partners bought land here. They built a train station (depot) and a hotel.

A post office was officially opened in June 1875. This helped the community grow even more.

Becoming a Census-Designated Place

For a long time, South Boardman was just an unincorporated community. But for the 2010 census, it was officially listed as a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means that for the first time, it had official boundaries and its own population count. It's important to remember that being a CDP is just for counting people and gathering statistics. It does not mean South Boardman has its own city government.
