The History of South Cumminsville
For many years, South Cumminsville was the southern part of a larger area called Cumminsville. Cumminsville became an official town in 1865. Eight years later, in 1873, it became part of the city of Cincinnati.
How South Cumminsville Grew
In the early 1900s, many German Catholic families moved to Cumminsville. Around the same time, many African-American families also moved to the area. They settled near Follett and Dreman avenues. This specific part of Cumminsville became known as South Cumminsville.
In the 1950s, new homes like the Millvale apartments were built. This helped South Cumminsville grow even more. It became a community where most residents were African-American. While the northern parts of Cumminsville started to be called Northside, South Cumminsville kept its own name and identity.

South Cumminsville is surrounded by several other Cincinnati neighborhoods. It shares borders with Northside, Camp Washington, Millvale, and Fay Apartments.
