Where Does the River Start?
The South Fork Umatilla River begins high up in the Blue Mountains. These mountains are part of a huge forest called the Umatilla National Forest. Imagine tiny streams coming together near places like Pileup Saddle and Black Mountain – that's where this river gets its start! The water here is very fresh and clean, coming from the mountains.
The River's Journey
From its starting point, the South Fork Umatilla River flows mostly north. It travels between two long hills, or ridges, named Goodman Ridge and Bobsled Ridge. As it flows, other smaller streams, called tributaries, join it. These include Shimmiehorn Creek, Thomas Creek, and Buck Creek. All these streams add more water to the South Fork.
Meeting the North Fork
Eventually, the South Fork Umatilla River meets up with another river called the North Fork Umatilla River. They join together near a spot known as Graves Butte. When these two forks combine, they form the main Umatilla River. It's like two paths coming together to make one bigger path!
