South Hamilton is a special postal address located within the town of Hamilton. It's not a separate town or city, but rather a way the Postal Service organizes mail delivery for a specific area. This address is linked to the ZIP code 01982. Most mail sent to people living in Hamilton uses the "South Hamilton" address.

How South Hamilton Got Its Name

The name "South Hamilton" came about in the 1960s. At that time, the Postal Service built a new, modern post office in downtown Hamilton. Their plan was to close the older post office, which was about two miles north on the same road.

However, many people in the community did not want the old post office to close. Because of their objections, the original post office stayed open. To tell the difference between the two post offices, especially before ZIP codes were used everywhere, the new post office was called the "South Hamilton" post office.

Mail Delivery in Hamilton

Even though the old post office remained open, the Postal Service moved most of its operations to the new building. This included almost all mail delivery services for the town. This is why nearly all mail delivered within Hamilton uses the "South Hamilton" postal address and the 01982 ZIP code.

Only mail going to P.O. Boxes at the old post office, or to a few buildings very close to it, still uses the "Hamilton" postal address and the 01936 ZIP code.
