History: The Falklands War
During the Falklands War in 1982, two Argentine A-4C Skyhawk planes crashed on South Jason island. This happened on May 9, 1982. Sadly, both pilots, Lieutenant Jorge Casco and Lieutenant Farias, died in these crashes.
On January 12, 2001, a special team visited the island. This team was an EOD team, which stands for Explosive Ordnance Disposal. Their job was to safely remove any dangerous old bombs or weapons that had been found since their last visit.
Finding Lt Casco's Remains
The remains of Lieutenant Casco were not found until after the war ended. They were located at 51°12′23″S 60°53′26″W / 51.20639°S 60.89056°W.
His family wanted him to be buried in the Falkland Islands. So, on March 7, 2009, he was buried at the Argentine Military Cemetery on East Falkland. This happened even after his remains were taken to Argentina in July 2008 for DNA testing. The testing helped to confirm who he was.
