South Washington Heights is a neighborhood located in the western part of Roanoke, Virginia. It shares its borders with several other neighborhoods. To the north, you'll find Washington Heights and Villa Heights. To the south is Wilmont, while Shenandoah West is to the east. On the west side, it borders Edgewood-Summit Hills. A major road, U.S. Highway 460 (also known as Melrose Avenue), runs along the entire northern edge of the neighborhood.
The Story of South Washington Heights
South Washington Heights became a part of the city of Roanoke in 1976. Before that, it was part of Roanoke County. Over time, this area has developed with a mix of both homes and businesses. Today, the neighborhood is well-known for its three cemeteries: Fairview, Saint Andrews, and Williams Memorial. These cemeteries take up a large portion of the land, about 30 percent of the total area. The neighborhood is also home to Williams Memorial Park, a green space for the community.
