A Look at Burlington's History
The city of Burlington became an official city in 1789. It grew very quickly after that. Burlington became an important center for travel and factories. Willard Street was created in the early 1800s. It was built about halfway up the hill between Lake Champlain and the University of Vermont (UVM) campus.
How the Area Grew
Because it was uphill from downtown Burlington, this area soon became a popular place to live. Wealthy families built their homes here. At first, there were large, widely spaced houses. These homes were built in styles like Federal and Greek Revival. Later in the 1800s, successful business people built even grander houses. These were in styles like Italianate and Second Empire. Sometimes, they divided the older, larger properties to build new homes.
Modern Day South Willard Street
More buildings were added in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Today, the area is a mix of people. You'll find local workers and students living there. Many students attend UVM or Champlain College. Champlain College's campus is actually located right in the middle of this historic district.
