Southampton Central has been around for a long time. It first opened its doors in 1895. Back then, it was known by a different name.
How the Station Grew Over Time
When it first opened on November 1, 1895, the station was called Southampton West. It was built by the London and South Western Railway company. Later, between 1934 and 1935, the station was made much bigger. This was to handle more passengers and trains.
On July 7, 1935, the station's name changed to Southampton Central. This name showed its importance as the main station. It was briefly renamed just "Southampton" in 1967. However, on May 29, 1994, it went back to being called Southampton Central.
