The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, known as SEAFDEC, is an important group that helps countries in Southeast Asia work together. It was started in 1967. SEAFDEC has 11 member countries. These are Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. These countries work together to share knowledge and solve problems related to fishing and fish farming.
How Does SEAFDEC Work?
SEAFDEC has a main office called the Secretariat, which is located in Thailand. This office helps coordinate all the activities. Besides the main office, SEAFDEC also has five special departments. Each department focuses on a different part of fisheries and aquaculture.
The Five Departments
- The Training Department (TD) is in Thailand. It helps train people in new fishing methods and technologies.
- The Marine Fisheries Research Department (MFRD) is in Singapore. This department studies fish and other sea creatures in the ocean. They learn about their lives and how to protect them.
- The Aquaculture Department (AQD) is in the Philippines. This department focuses on fish farming. They research better ways to raise fish, shrimp, and other aquatic animals.
- The Marine Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (MFRDMD) is in Malaysia. This group works on managing ocean fish resources. They help make sure fishing is done responsibly.
- The Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (IFRDMD) is in Indonesia. This department focuses on fish in rivers, lakes, and other freshwater areas. They help manage these resources.
