The Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, known as SEAFDEC, is an important group that helps countries in Southeast Asia work together. It was started in 1967. Think of it as a team of countries helping each other with fishing and seafood farming.
SEAFDEC's main goal is to make sure that fishing and seafood farming in Southeast Asia can continue for a long time. They want to keep our oceans and rivers healthy. This way, there will always be enough fish for everyone.
What is SEAFDEC?
SEAFDEC is an "inter-governmental body." This means it's an organization created by different governments working together. It's not just one country, but many countries joining forces for a common purpose.
There are 11 countries that are members of SEAFDEC. These include Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. These countries share ideas and work on projects together.
How SEAFDEC Works
SEAFDEC has a main office, called the Secretariat, located in Bangkok, Thailand. This office helps to manage all the different projects and activities. It makes sure everything runs smoothly.
Besides the main office, SEAFDEC also has five special departments. Each department focuses on a different part of fishing and seafood. They are located in different member countries.
SEAFDEC's Departments
- Training Department (TD) in Thailand: This department helps train people. They teach new ways to fish and farm seafood. They also teach how to protect the ocean.
- Marine Fisheries Research Department (MFRD) in Singapore: This group studies fish that live in the ocean. They learn about different types of fish and how many there are. This helps to make sure we don't catch too many fish.
- Aquaculture Department (AQD) in the Philippines: "Aquaculture" means farming fish, shrimp, and other seafood in special ponds or tanks. This department researches the best ways to farm seafood.
- Marine Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (MFRDMD) in Malaysia: This department works on managing ocean fish resources. They help countries make rules for fishing. This ensures that fish populations stay healthy.
- Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (IFRDMD) in Indonesia: This group focuses on fish in rivers, lakes, and other fresh water. They help manage these fish resources. They also look for ways to improve fishing in these areas.
By working together through these departments, SEAFDEC helps its member countries. They share new ideas, research, and technologies. This helps to keep our waters full of fish for future generations.
