Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Southpointe is a large business park, about 589-acre (238 ha) big. It's located in Cecil Township near Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, south of Pittsburgh. You can easily spot it from Interstate 79. Many important companies have their offices here, including Fortune 500 members like CONSOL Energy and Viatris, as well as Ansys.

Southpointe's Story and Cool Features

A Hub for Energy Companies

In recent years, Southpointe has become a key location for companies that work with natural gas. This is because of the Marcellus Shale, a large underground rock formation in the Appalachian region that holds natural gas. Companies like Range Resources, Noble Energy, and EQT Corporation have offices here. Other businesses that support the natural gas industry are also located in Southpointe.

Home of Hockey and Golf

Southpointe is also home to the PrintScape Arena at Southpointe. This arena was once the main practice and training spot for the famous Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team. They used it from 1995 until 2015.

The Southpointe Golf Club, located here, also hosted a big golf tournament. It was called the Mylan Classic. This event was part of the PGA TOUR's Web.com Tour (now called the Korn Ferry Tour) and took place from 2010 to 2014.

How Southpointe Was Built

The idea for Southpointe began in the 1980s. Local groups like the Washington County Redevelopment Authority and the RIDC worked together. They wanted to develop a large piece of land in Cecil Township. This land used to be the site of a place called the Western Center, which was once a school and a state hospital.

The first part of Southpointe, called Southpointe I, was bought in 1986. Construction started in 1993. This spot was chosen because it was easy to get to from Interstate 79. It was also close to Pittsburgh and had lower taxes.

By 2013, Southpointe I was full of businesses. A second phase, Southpointe II, was almost finished. Together, Southpointe I and II cover about 800 acres (320 ha). There are even plans for a third phase, called Cool Valley Industrial Park, on the other side of Interstate 79.

The company that developed Southpointe was Millcraft Industries.
