Fortune 500 facts for kids

The Fortune 500 is a special list made every year by Fortune magazine. It ranks the 500 largest companies in the United States based on how much money they earn, called their total revenue. This list includes both companies whose shares are traded publicly and private companies if their earnings are known. The idea for the Fortune 500 came from Edgar P. Smith, an editor at Fortune magazine. The very first list was published in 1955. The Fortune 500 is more famous than the smaller Fortune 100 list or the larger Fortune 1000 list.

History of the List
The Fortune 500 list was first put together by Edgar P. Smith. It was published in January 1955. The first ten companies on that original list were General Motors, Jersey Standard, U.S. Steel, General Electric, Esmark, Chrysler, Armour, Gulf Oil, Mobil, and DuPont.
How Companies Are Chosen
When the Fortune 500 list first started, it only included companies that made money from things like manufacturing (making products), mining, and finding energy. At that time, Fortune also made other lists. These included the "Fortune 50" lists for the 50 biggest banks, utility companies, insurance companies, retailers (stores), and transportation companies.
In 1994, Fortune magazine changed how it picked companies for the list. They started including service companies too. Because of this change, 291 new companies joined the famous list. Three of these new companies even made it into the Top 10 that year.
Why the List is Important
As of 2020, the companies on the Fortune 500 list are very important to the United States' economy. They make up about two-thirds of the country's total economic output. These companies earned around $14.2 trillion in revenue and made $1.2 trillion in profits. Their total value in the market was about $20.4 trillion.
The money these companies earn also makes up about 18% of all the money earned in the entire world. Together, these companies employ about 29.2 million people around the globe. That's almost 0.4% of the world's total population!
