Southport is a community in Chemung County, New York, United States. It is called a census-designated place (CDP) because the U.S. Census Bureau defines its boundaries for counting people. In 2020, about 6,782 people lived in Southport.

Railroad History

For many years, the Pennsylvania Railroad had a large train yard in Southport. This yard was a busy place for trains on the Elmira Branch. Trains traveled from here to places like Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Canandaigua, and Sodus Point.

Just north of Southport, the Pennsylvania Railroad shared its tracks with the Erie Railroad. This shared section went right through downtown Elmira. The yard was very important for train crews and had many buildings. It covered a large part of Southport.

The Elmira Branch was one of the last places where you could see steam locomotives. These powerful steam trains were used here almost until 1957.

Yard Closure

In the 1970s, a big storm called Hurricane Agnes caused a lot of damage. It destroyed bridges south of Elmira on the railroad branch. Because of this damage, the railroad company, Penn Central, decided to close the Elmira Branch south of Elmira. The large train yard in Southport was also closed. Today, there are no signs left of the old railroad yard.
