Commercial Crew Program
SpaceX Crew-6 →

SpaceX Crew-5 was a space mission that sent four astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). It was the fifth time SpaceX launched a crew for NASA's Commercial Crew Program. This mission used a Crew Dragon spacecraft named Endurance.

The flight was planned to launch in September 2022. Its main job was to carry the crew to the ISS. The mission was expected to last about 180 days.

The crew included two NASA astronauts, one JAXA astronaut, and one Russian cosmonaut. Some of these crew members were moved to this flight because of delays with another company's space program. For example, Commander Nicole Mann and Pilot Josh Cassada were originally assigned to other flights. Mission Specialist Koichi Wakata and Anna Kikina also joined this mission.

For three of the four crew members, this was their first trip to space. However, Koichi Wakata is a very experienced astronaut. He had already flown to space many times before this mission.

Meet the Crew

This mission was special because it was the first time a Russian cosmonaut, Anna Kikina, flew on a Crew Dragon spacecraft. This was part of a new system between Russia and the United States. They want to make sure that at least one astronaut from NASA and one cosmonaut from Roscosmos are always on the ISS.

This system helps both countries keep their equipment running on the station. It also means that if one type of spacecraft, like Soyuz or Crew Dragon, can't fly for a while, the other country can still send people to the ISS. The last time a Russian cosmonaut flew on a U.S. spacecraft was in 2002. That was Nikolai Budarin on the STS-113 Space Shuttle mission.

Here are the main crew members who flew on SpaceX Crew-5:
