Spaldeen facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A Spalding Hi-Bounce Ball, often called a Spaldeen, is a bouncy rubber ball. It is about the same size as a tennis ball, but it does not have the fuzzy felt covering. Spaldeens are very popular for playing many different street games. These games became popular in the middle of the 1900s. Some fun games played with a Spaldeen include Chinese handball, stoop ball, and stickball (which is like a version of baseball). Kids also play games like hit-the-penny, where you try to make a penny flip over on the sidewalk.

Why is it Called a Spaldeen?

The name "Spaldeen" comes from how people in New York City used to say "Spalding." Spalding is the company that makes these balls. The name "Spaldeen" became so well-known that the company now uses it in their advertising. It is even a registered trademark now!

The Spaldeen's Journey Through Time

Spaldeens were a big hit with kids from the 1930s all the way to the 1970s. In big cities, where there wasn't much grass, Spaldeens were perfect for street games. This was because they were super bouncy and light.

However, in 1979, Spalding stopped making the ball. They thought that games like stickball were not as popular anymore. But many people missed the Spaldeen! So, in 1999, the ball made a big comeback, and people were very excited to see it again.

Many Colors of Spaldeens

When Spaldeens returned in 1999, they started being made in many different colors. Before that, they were mostly pink. Now, you can find them in colors like black, blue, green, orange, purple, red, and yellow.
