How the Spanish Paralympic Committee Started
The Spanish Paralympic Committee was created in 1995. This happened because Spanish athletes did very well at the 1992 Summer Paralympics. Their success showed how important it was to have a dedicated organization for Paralympic sports. A group called ONCE (which helps blind people in Spain) also helped to set up the CPE.
In 1998, the Spanish government made some changes to its laws. These changes officially recognized the CPE as being just as important as the Spanish Olympic Committee. This meant the CPE gained a special legal status, showing it was very helpful to the public.
How the Committee Works and Gets Money
The Spanish Paralympic Committee is a non-profit group. This means it operates and is taxed in the same way as the Spanish Olympic Committee. The money the CPE earns, for example from events, is not taxed by the government, except for money from sporting events.
The CPE works closely with five main Spanish sports groups for people with disabilities. These groups represent over 13,000 athletes! They help organize sports events all over Spain. These groups include:
- Spanish Federation of Sports for the Blind (FEDC)
- Spanish Sports Federation for Persons with Physical Disabilities (FEDDF)
- Spanish Federation of Sportspeople with Intellectual Disabilities (FEDDI)
- Spanish Federation of Sports for the Deaf (FEDS)
- Spanish Federation of Sportspeople with Cerebral Palsy (FEDPC)
Since 2005, the CPE has received extra help from a program called Plan ADO. This program brings in money and support from companies and businesses. They sponsor athletes, events, and teams. Between 2005 and 2008, Plan ADO provided about 17.5 million Euros. This money helped prepare the Spanish Paralympic teams for big events like the 2006 Winter Paralympics, 2008 Summer Paralympics, and 2010 Winter Paralympics. The funds directly helped 390 athletes and 135 support staff, like coaches. The CPE is in charge of making sure this money goes to the right athletes and programs.
In 2013, Miguel Segarra, who is the Secretary General of the CPE, traveled to Bonn. He was part of the group that presented Madrid's bid to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Important People on the Board
Many important people have been part of the Spanish Paralympic Committee's board. For example, Fernando Vicente Martin was the Vice President in the late 1990s.
Miguel Carballeda was the President in 2008 and 2009. Miguel Segarra was the Secretary General during those years and continued in that role in 2013.
Infanta Elena, Duchess of Lugo is the Honorary President of the Spanish Paralympic Committee. This is a special role where she supports the committee. She even led the Spanish team at the 2008 Summer Paralympics.
