The Navarra was a type of warship called an unprotected cruiser. It belonged to the Spanish Navy in the late 1800s. It was part of the Aragon-class of ships.
The Navarra was built in Ferrol, Spain. Work on the ship started in 1869. At first, it was planned to be a strong, armored ship. This design included a lot of armor, like 890 tons of it. It also had thick armor around its waterline.
However, the plans changed in 1870. The ship's design was switched to be an unprotected cruiser. This meant it would not have heavy armor. Political events caused delays in its construction. The Navarra was finally launched in 1881 and finished in 1882.
Because its design changed so much, the Navarra ended up with a very heavy wooden hull. By the time it was finished, this type of hull was already old-fashioned.
Ship Features
The Navarra was designed to serve in Spain's colonies. It had two funnels and was rigged like a barque. This means it had a specific type of sails. The ship's engines were also made at the naval shipyard in Ferrol.
When the ship was completed, its main guns were already outdated. These were 8-inch guns made by Armstrong. They were quickly replaced with newer, more modern guns made by Krupp. The new 5.9-inch guns were placed in special areas called sponsons.
Ship's Service
The Navarra officially joined the Spanish Navy in 1882. By the 1890s, it was part of the Cadiz Naval Group.
What happened to the Navarra after that is not completely clear. Some records say it was turned into a hulk in 1896. A hulk is an old ship that is no longer used for sailing. It was then sold for scrap metal in 1899. Other records suggest it survived longer. They say it became a training ship for naval cadets in 1900.
