Speewa is a small rural area located in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. It sits close to the famous Murray River. This area is part of the Murray River Council local government.
One cool thing about Speewa is its connection to a place with the same name in Speewa, Victoria. These two places are linked by the Speewa Ferry, which crosses the Murray River. It's pretty unusual for two places right next to each other, but in different states, to share the exact same name! For a while, the post office for Speewa was even in Victoria (from 1924 to 1964) before moving to New South Wales. It closed down in 1973.
Speewa Island: A River Mystery
Speewa is also known for something called Speewa Island. This "island" is formed by Speewa Creek, which is a special type of river branch called an anabranch. An anabranch is like a side channel that leaves the main river and then usually rejoins it later.
When the Murray River has a lot of water, Speewa Creek used to fill up and surround most of the Speewa area, making it an island. However, the upper part of Speewa Creek is now usually dry. This means Speewa Island mostly exists in name only today. It's located next to, and downstream from, Beveridge Island in Victoria.
