The Spencer W. Kimball Tower is a tall, 12-story building on the Brigham Young University campus in Provo, Utah. People also call it the Kimball Tower or KMBL. It holds many classrooms and offices for the university's leaders and staff.
Who is Spencer W. Kimball?
This building is named after Spencer W. Kimball. He was an important leader, the twelfth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 2018, the Kimball family asked for the building's nickname to change. It went from SWKT to KMBL.
Building Design and Height
The Spencer W. Kimball Tower was finished in 1981. It stands about 161 feet 6 inches (49.23 m) tall. For a while, it was the tallest building in Provo, Utah. Later, other buildings became taller, like the Provo Fourth District Courthouse in 2018. The Pedersen Patient Tower is now the tallest building in Provo.
The architects designed the building in a special way. They placed it at a 45-degree angle to other buildings nearby. This helped it feel less like a long hallway inside.
What's Inside the Tower?
The Kimball Tower is home to several important parts of Brigham Young University. It houses the College of Family, Home and Social Sciences. It also holds the Brigham Young University College of Nursing. These colleges have many different departments and programs inside the tower.
