Spergularia marina, also known as salt sandspurry or lesser sea-spurrey, is a type of flowering plant. It belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family, which is also called the pink family. This plant is special because it can grow in salty places.

Spergularia marina is usually an annual plant, meaning it lives for only one growing season. Sometimes, it can be a perennial, living for more than two years. Its stems can grow up to 35 centimeters (about 14 inches) long and spread out along the ground. Like other plants in the sea-spurrey group, its flowers have petals that can be white or pink. The green parts under the petals, called sepals, are usually a bit longer than the petals themselves, measuring about 2.5 to 4 millimeters.

What is Spergularia Marina?

Spergularia marina is a small, hardy plant that loves salty environments. You can often find it growing near the sea, like on beaches or in salt marshes. It also grows in salty areas far from the coast. Its ability to handle salt makes it unique among many plants.

How it Got its Name

Scientists give every living thing a special two-part name, like Spergularia marina, so everyone knows exactly which plant they are talking about. This plant was first described by a famous scientist named Carl Linnaeus in 1753. He gave it a different name back then.

Over time, as scientists learned more about plants, they sometimes changed the names to put them in the correct groups. This plant's name was changed to Spergularia marina by scientists J.Presl and C. Presl in 1819. Even though the naming history can be a bit complicated, Spergularia marina is the name most scientists use today.

Where it Grows

This plant is found in many parts of the world, especially in places with salty soil. It grows naturally in:

  • Europe
  • North Africa
  • Temperate parts of Asia
  • Eastern Canada
  • The Eastern United States

It's a great example of a plant that has adapted to tough conditions, showing how life can thrive even in salty environments where most other plants can't.
