Sperry started to grow in 1869. That year, a person named John M. Sperry moved there. He was the one who opened the first post office in the community. This was an important step in making Sperry a real place.
Trains and Railways
For many years, Sperry was a stop for trains. It was on the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway line. This railway started being built in 1869, the same year Sperry began. Later, this line became part of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad.
Another railway, the Burlington and Northwestern Railway, also used this line. It later became part of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. These trains helped people and goods travel to and from Sperry. However, all train service on these lines stopped in 1980.
