A spice bag is a super popular fast food meal in Ireland. It's inspired by tasty Asian cuisine. Imagine a mix of crispy, deep-fried chips (that's what they call French fries in Ireland!). These chips are seasoned with salt and chili.
But wait, there's more! A spice bag also has chicken. This can be shredded chicken, chicken balls, or even chicken wings. You'll also find colorful red and green bell peppers, sliced chili peppers, and fried onions. All these ingredients are tossed together with a special blend of spices.
Good news for everyone! If you don't eat meat, you can often find a vegetarian or vegan version. Instead of chicken, it usually has deep-fried tofu. Sometimes, a little tub of curry sauce comes with it for dipping.
You can buy spice bags in Chinese takeaways and chippers (fish and chip shops). This yummy dish first appeared in the 2010s. It quickly became a huge favorite! In fact, it was voted 'Ireland's Favourite Takeaway Dish' in the 2020 Just Eat National Takeaway Awards.
The Story of the Spice Bag
Where Did the Spice Bag Come From?
The spice bag is a fairly new invention. It first popped up around 2010. According to a reporter named Liam Geraghty from RTÉ, a Chinese takeaway called The Sunflower in Templeogue, Dublin, is thought to have created it.
The very first spice bag was sold online through the Just Eat food delivery service in 2012. From there, its popularity just exploded across Ireland!
