The splendid poison frog (Oophaga speciosa) was a type of poison dart frog. It is now extinct, meaning it no longer exists anywhere in the world. This frog used to live only in a specific area of western Panama, in a mountain range called the Cordillera de Talamanca.
It preferred to live in warm, wet lowland areas and in montane forests (forests found in mountains).

About the Splendid Poison Frog
The splendid poison frog was a small, brightly colored frog. Like other poison dart frogs, its bright colors were a warning to predators. These colors told other animals that the frog was poisonous and should not be eaten.
Where it Lived
This special frog was only found in a small part of Panama. This means it was endemic to that area. It lived in the eastern part of the Cordillera de Talamanca mountains. Its home was in humid forests, both in low areas and higher up in the mountains.
Why it's Extinct
The splendid poison frog used to be quite common. However, its numbers started to drop. Scientists now believe it is extinct. One reason for its decline might have been a special defense strategy called Müllerian mimicry.
Müllerian Mimicry Explained
Müllerian mimicry is when two or more species that are dangerous or poisonous look very similar to each other. This helps both species. For example, the splendid poison frog looked a lot like the strawberry poison frog. Both frogs were poisonous. Because they looked alike, predators learned to avoid both of them after trying to eat just one. This shared warning sign protected both species.
However, if one of the species starts to disappear, the protection for the other might also lessen. The exact reasons for the splendid poison frog's extinction are still being studied, but habitat loss and diseases might have played a part.
