SpongeBob's Role in the Cartoon Show
SpongeBob is a kind, innocent, and very excited sea sponge. He lives in a pineapple house under the sea. His pet snail, Gary, lives with him. Their home is Bikini Bottom, a city where many sea creatures act like people.
SpongeBob's best friend is Patrick Star, a starfish who lives next door. SpongeBob loves his job as a fry cook. He works at the Krusty Krab, a popular fast-food restaurant. His boss is Mr. Krabs, a red crab who cares a lot about money. Mr. Krabs also acts like a father figure to SpongeBob. Squidward Tentacles, an octopus, is SpongeBob's grumpy neighbor. Squidward also works at the Krusty Krab as a cashier.
SpongeBob enjoys catching jellyfish, blowing bubbles, and doing karate. He practices karate with his friend Sandy Cheeks, a squirrel from Texas. His biggest dream is to get his boat-driving license. He takes lessons at Mrs. Puff's boating school. But he often gets nervous and crashes, so he has failed many times. SpongeBob is so positive that he often doesn't notice when others are annoyed. For instance, he thinks Squidward loves hanging out, even though Squidward usually finds him bothersome.
How SpongeBob Was Created
The Idea for SpongeBob
Stephen Hillenburg, who created SpongeBob SquarePants, loved the ocean as a kid. He also started drawing and creating art when he was young. In college, he studied both. He majored in ocean biology and minored in art at Humboldt State University. After college in 1984, he worked at the Ocean Institute. This place in Dana Point, California, teaches people about ocean science and history.
While there, Hillenburg made a comic book. It was an early version of SpongeBob called The Intertidal Zone. This comic had many sea creatures that acted like humans. Many of them later became characters in the SpongeBob show. After seeing an animation festival, Hillenburg decided to study animation. He went to the California Institute of the Arts. He later met Joe Murray. Joe offered him a job on the Nickelodeon show Rocko's Modern Life, which started in 1993.
Martin Olson, a writer for Rocko's Modern Life, read Hillenburg's comic. He told Hillenburg to make a TV show based on it. Hillenburg started developing characters from his comic. One of them was Bob the Sponge. He wanted his show to be different from other cartoons. Many popular shows then were about two friends, like The Ren & Stimpy Show. So, Hillenburg decided to focus on one main character. He chose a sea sponge, thinking it was the "weirdest" sea creature.
At first, Bob the Sponge looked like a real sea sponge. Hillenburg used this design early on. But he later changed the design to look like a kitchen sponge. He felt this shape fit the character's "square" personality perfectly. For SpongeBob's personality, Hillenburg was inspired by innocent, childlike characters. He liked figures like Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, Jerry Lewis, and Pee-wee Herman.
Designing SpongeBob
Hillenburg tried many ideas before he finally came up with SpongeBob. He said SpongeBob was inspired by characters like Laurel and Hardy and Pee-wee Herman. He especially liked the innocent, simple characters, like Stan Laurel.
Early drawings showed SpongeBob with a red hat, green base, white shirt, and a tie. His look slowly changed over time. He also wore brown pants, which stayed in his final design. SpongeBob was designed to be a goofy, optimistic, and childlike character. This style was similar to what Jerry Lewis was famous for.
At first, the character was called SpongeBoy, and the show was SpongeBoy Ahoy!. But that name was already being used for another product. They found this out after recording the voices for the first pilot episode. Hillenburg knew the name still needed "Sponge" in it. He didn't want people to think he was a "Cheese Man"! In 1997, he chose "SpongeBob" as the first name. "SquarePants" became his last name, referring to his square shape. Hillenburg thought it sounded catchy.
Before making SpongeBob a full series, Nickelodeon wanted the main character to be a child in school. They thought it would be more popular that way. This was different from Hillenburg's idea. He wanted SpongeBob to be an adult. They found a solution by adding Mrs. Puff to the show. As a driving instructor, she allowed SpongeBob to be an adult who still went to school. This made both Hillenburg and Nickelodeon happy. Hillenburg liked this solution. He felt it was a "positive thing" for the show.
Some episodes from 2000 and 2001 say SpongeBob's birthday is July 14, 1986. This would make him 39 years old as of May 2026. However, his exact age is usually not clear in the show. SpongeBob can sometimes change his shape. For example, he can turn into the shape of Texas or his friends' faces to be funny.
The Voice of SpongeBob
The experienced voice actor Tom Kenny provides SpongeBob's voice. He had worked with Hillenburg before on Rocko's Modern Life. When Hillenburg created SpongeBob SquarePants, he asked Kenny to be the voice. Hillenburg used parts of Kenny's personality, and others', to create SpongeBob.
Kenny shared that the voice was inspired by an actor he met during a commercial audition. Kenny had actually used a similar voice before. It was for a small background character in Rocko's Modern Life. At first, Kenny forgot the voice since he had only used it once. But Hillenburg remembered it when creating SpongeBob. He played a video clip from Rocko to help Kenny recall the voice. When Hillenburg heard Kenny, he said, "That's it! We've found SpongeBob's voice."
Kenny remembered that Nickelodeon wasn't sure about him at first. They wanted more auditions and hoped to find a famous person for the role. But Hillenburg, as the creator, stood firm. He told them he liked Kenny's voice and didn't need a celebrity. SpongeBob's high-pitched laugh was made to be unique. Kenny said they wanted a laugh that was a bit annoying, like Popeye or Woody Woodpecker.
Over the years, SpongeBob's voice changed. It started a bit lower and became higher-pitched. Kenny noticed the change, saying it was mostly about the pitch. He explained it wasn't on purpose, but a slow process. As more stories were told, the voice naturally adapted. Comparing early episodes to later ones, Kenny felt the change wasn't too extreme.
When SpongeBob SquarePants was translated into other languages, the voice actors used Kenny's voice as a guide. But they also added their own unique touches. For example, in the French version, SpongeBob speaks with a slight lisp.
In early 2021, SpongeBob's voice became available on 15.ai. This is an artificial intelligence tool that creates speech in character voices. People said the tool did a great job of copying SpongeBob's distinct voice. Fans made many videos with SpongeBob saying new phrases. Critics noted these sounded almost exactly like the real SpongeBob.
SpongeBob Merchandise
SpongeBob's popularity led to many successful products. In 2002, SpongeBob SquarePants dolls sold 75,000 per week. This was even faster than the popular Tickle Me Elmo dolls at the time. SpongeBob was also very popular in Japan, especially with women. Nickelodeon's parent company, Viacom, aimed its marketing at women there. They wanted to build the SpongeBob SquarePants brand. Some people doubted SpongeBob would be popular in Japan. His design was very different from characters like Hello Kitty and Pikachu. The character also inspired a soap-filled sponge product called SpongeTech.
In early 2009, Simmons Jewelry Co. released a special diamond pendant. It was part of a SpongeBob jewelry collection and cost $75,000.
On May 17, 2013, Build-A-Bear Workshop launched a new SpongeBob SquarePants collection. These items were available in stores and online in North America.
SpongeBob even inspired a car design! On July 13, 2013, Toyota and Nickelodeon worked together. They revealed plans for a SpongeBob-themed Toyota Highlander. This special 2014 Toyota Highlander concept car was shown during a SpongeBob Day event. It happened at a baseball game between the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres in San Diego. Afterward, the car visited seven other U.S. locations, including the Nickelodeon Suites Resort Orlando in Florida.
