Sprague Lake is a beautiful lake found inside Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. It is located near Glacier Creek, a few miles south of the Hollowell turnoff. The lake is a popular spot for visitors who want to enjoy nature.

You can take an easy walk around the lake on a path that is about half a mile long. This path is great for everyone, even those using wheelchairs. It has special boardwalks and bridges that offer amazing views. From here, you can see tall mountains like Flattop Mountain and Hallet Peak. Sprague Lake is also a favorite place for fishing, especially for Brook trout.

The Story of Sprague Lake

Who Was Abner Sprague?

Sprague Lake is named after a man named Abner Sprague. He was one of the first people to settle in this area. In 1874, Abner Sprague started a homestead here. A homestead is a piece of land given to someone to settle and farm.

From Homestead to Hotel

Abner Sprague later opened a lodge near the lake. This lodge was a place where people could stay. It was popular for "dude ranching," which meant guests could experience life on a ranch. People also came to the lodge for hunting and fishing trips.

To make the fishing even better, Abner Sprague built a small dam at one end of the lake. This helped to control the water level and improve the fish habitat.

Becoming Part of a National Park

In 1915, the area around Sprague Lake became part of the new Rocky Mountain National Park. Even after it became a park, the Sprague Hotel continued to welcome guests. It was a well-known place for visitors to stay and enjoy the park's beauty.

The original hotel building is no longer there today. It used to stand close to where the main parking lot is now.
