History of Spring Creek
Spring Creek got its name from a nearby stream (a small river) that also had the same name. This stream flows into a bigger river called the Middle Fork of the Forked Deer River. The community was named after a post office opened there in the spring of 1824.
Early Development and Education
In January 1854, Spring Creek was given a special permission called a municipal charter. This allowed it to act more like an official town. Soon after, in March of the same year, a school for boys called the West Tennessee Baptist Male Institute was started in Spring Creek. This school later changed its name to Madison College. It taught students for many years until a fire destroyed the building in February 1876.
Spring Creek During the Civil War
The community of Spring Creek was mostly safe during the American Civil War. It did not see much fighting. However, businesses in the area faced problems because of the war. At that time, the main things people grew and sold in Spring Creek were cotton and wheat.
Changes in Local Schools
In the early 1900s, Spring Creek had its own high school. But in 1943, this high school closed. Its students joined other schools to form a new, bigger school called North Side High School. Later, in 1964, the elementary school in Spring Creek also closed down.
