History of Spring Garden Township

Spring Garden Township has an interesting past. A very old house, called The Nook, is located here. It was built by Francis Farquhar. This historic house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This means it is an important place worth protecting.

Geography and Location

Spring Garden Township covers a total area of about 6.7 square miles. Most of this area is land. Only a tiny part, about 0.04 square miles, is water. The township is part of York County in Pennsylvania.

Economy and Local Businesses

Spring Garden Township is home to York International. This company is now part of Johnson Controls. It is one of the biggest suppliers of HVAC systems in the United States. HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. These systems help keep buildings warm or cool.

In 1998, there was an incident at the York International plant. A spark caused a leak in a propane storage area. The event was felt up to 25 miles away. Windows nearby were broken, and doors were knocked down. About 20 people were hurt, and one person sadly died. This happened during a shift change at the plant.

In 2004, leaders from Spring Garden Township and Springettsbury Township started thinking about combining their fire services. They formed a committee to plan this. In 2006, they hired experts to help create a full plan.

This plan was approved in 2007. Both townships agreed to create a new fire commission. This commission would have seven members from both townships. The first meeting of the York Area United Fire and Rescue Commission was in September 2007.

The new combined fire department officially started on May 5, 2008. It was named York County Company 89. Since then, the department has updated its equipment. For example, they bought new fire trucks in 2010. In 2010, the fire commission and the firefighters' union signed their first joint agreement.
