Early History of Spring Hill
Spring Hill has a long history, dating back to the 1700s. One of the first people to live here was an Irish sea captain named James Patton.
Captain James Patton's Home
In 1741, Captain Patton built his first home in Spring Hill. It was a simple log cabin. This cabin was located on what is now known as Patton Farm Road. Later, in 1754, Captain Patton hired carpenters to build him a new, stronger home. This new house was a one-room log house, about 20 feet by 20 feet. It had a wooden floor, a high ceiling, and a spacious loft upstairs.
Spring Hill Today
Spring Hill used to be a very busy place. In 1882, it was a lively village with several stores where people could buy things, and two churches. Like many other communities in Augusta County, Spring Hill grew and did well into the early 1900s.
What Spring Hill Looks Like Now
Today, Spring Hill is much quieter. Most of the old businesses are gone. What remains are a Presbyterian church, some houses, and a few empty storefronts that show what the village once was. Spring Hill is now part of the larger area that includes the cities of Staunton and Waynesboro. This area is known as the Staunton-Waynesboro Micropolitan Statistical Area.
