Springfield is a small place in Posey County, Indiana, in the United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a place with a group of homes and businesses, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's governed by the larger county.
Springfield's Story
Springfield was officially planned and laid out in 1817. When it was first created, it was chosen to be the county seat for Posey County. A county seat is like the main town where the county government offices are located.
A Change of Plans
Springfield served as the county seat until 1825. But then, the county seat was moved to Mount Vernon. When this happened, many businesses and people moved away from Springfield. This caused the town's population to become much smaller.
Mail and More
Even though the county seat moved, Springfield still had a post office for a while. It was opened in 1818, which means people could send and receive mail there. However, the post office eventually closed in 1828.
