History of Springfield
The community of Springfield has a long and interesting history. It started almost 200 years ago! Many of the first people who settled here are buried in the nearby Union Cemetery. Some of these early settlers even fought in the American Civil War, a very important war in U.S. history.
Springfield was also the hometown of Thomas W. Hill, who was an "Assemblyman." An Assemblyman is someone elected to represent their area in the state's government, helping to make laws.
Some homes from the Victorian Era (a time from the late 1800s) are still standing in Springfield. While some are very old and not safe, others have been fixed up and look great today.

Transportation in Springfield
Springfield used to be an important stop on a train line. This line was part of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, often called the Milwaukee Road. This railroad helped people and goods travel across the country.
However, the Milwaukee Road went out of business in 1980. The train line that went through Springfield was then closed.
Today, the old train station building has a new life! It's now a cafe and a place for people to rest. This is especially helpful for those using the White River State Trail, which is a path for walking and biking built on the old railroad tracks.
