What is a Sprite Melon?
A sprite melon is a small, round fruit. It's usually about the size of a grapefruit. Most sprite melons weigh between 1.0 and 1.5 pounds.
What Does it Look Like?
When you cut open a sprite melon, you'll see its flesh is a creamy ivory color. The outside peel changes color as the melon ripens. It starts as ivory when it's not quite ready. As it gets perfectly ripe, the peel turns a yellowish color. You might also notice thin brown lines appearing near the stem when the melon is at its best. Like many fruits, sprite melons have seeds inside.
How Does it Taste?
Sprite melons are known for being very sweet and juicy. Their firm flesh is often eaten as a dessert. Many people say the flavor is a mix of pears and honeydew. However, sprite melons are much sweeter than both! They can be up to 18% sugar, which is about 25% to 30% more sugar than other melons.
Where Do Sprite Melons Come From?
Sprite melons originally come from Japan. They are part of a plant family called Cucurbitaceae. This family also includes other well-known plants like cucumbers, gourds, and pumpkins.
