Squares are a popular British crisp known for their unique square shape. They are made by Walkers, a company that is part of PepsiCo. Before becoming part of Walkers, these crisps were originally made by The Smith's Snackfood Company.

The Story of Squares Crisps

Squares crisps have been around for a long time, since at least the 1980s. Back then, they were known as "Square Crisps."

Early Days and Name Changes

In the early days, the famous comedian Lenny Henry appeared in many of their TV adverts. The crisps were advertised with fun slogans like "more of a crunch than a crisp." Another slogan was "the crisp that isn't a crisp," highlighting their unique texture.

In 1989, a big company called PepsiCo bought both Walkers and Smiths. After this, "Square Crisps" changed their name to simply "Square." They were also called "potato snacks" instead of crisps.

For several years, the product stayed under the Smiths brand. Other popular crisps like Quavers and Monster Munch had already moved to the Walkers brand. Then, in January 2001, Walkers announced a big change. They would relaunch Square and move it from the Smiths brand to the Walkers brand. Soon after, the name changed again to "Squares," which is what we know them as today.

Packet Designs Over Time

The look of Squares packets has changed many times through the years. In the 1980s, the design showed that they had 25% less fat than other crisps. The salt and vinegar packets were a much lighter blue than the dark blue used now.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, a jagged border was added around the logo. This was a big change, along with the new company and name. In the late 2000s, the logo and design changed again for a short time. A new design came out in the 2010s, which used ideas from older designs. This design is very similar to the current one from 2019, but without the jagged border.

It's interesting that the colors of Squares packets are different from other Walkers crisps. For example, the salt & vinegar Squares come in a blue packet, not green. And the cheese & onion packets are green, not blue.

What Are Squares Crisps Like?

Squares crisps come in three main flavors that people love. These are salt & vinegar, ready salted, and cheese & onion.

You can often buy them in multipacks, which have several smaller bags inside. The salt & vinegar flavor is the most popular choice among fans.

The comedian Richard Osman once joked about Squares in his book, The World Cup of Everything. He said that Squares were invented because "scientists were concerned that children weren't hurting the roofs of their mouths as often as they should be." This is a funny way to describe their famously crunchy texture!
