Squire John Trelawney is an important character in the famous adventure book Treasure Island, written by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1883. He is a wealthy landowner who helps fund the exciting journey to find hidden treasure.
Who is Squire Trelawney?
Robert Louis Stevenson, the author, describes Squire Trelawney as a very tall man, over six feet high. He is also quite plump. His face looks strong and ready for anything, with lines and redness from his many travels. He has very dark eyebrows that move a lot, showing he can be quick-tempered, but not in a bad way.
The Squire is a lively and sometimes boastful person. He is a good friend to Dr. Livesey. He also helps Jim Hawkins, the main character, stay safe from pirates. Jim has found a secret treasure map, and the pirates want it.
Squire Trelawney's Role in the Adventure
When Jim Hawkins shows the treasure map, Squire Trelawney immediately decides to find the treasure. He plans a sea trip with Dr. Livesey and Jim. The Squire pays for the entire journey to Treasure Island.
He goes to the docks in Bristol and buys a ship called the Hispaniola. He hires Captain Smollett to be the ship's leader. He also hires Long John Silver, a former ship's cook who now owns a tavern. Silver helps Trelawney find a crew for the ship. However, Silver secretly recruits many pirates.
Dr. Livesey warns Trelawney to keep their mission a secret. But the Squire is not good at keeping secrets. Soon, everyone seems to know they are looking for treasure. Because he talks too much, others on the ship sometimes ignore his ideas. Jim Hawkins notices that neither he nor the captain paid much attention to Mr. Trelawney's complaints.
Later, Trelawney learns that Silver's crew are old pirates planning to take over the ship. He realizes his mistake and tells Captain Smollett, "Now, Captain, you were right, and I was wrong. I own myself an ass, and I await your orders." This shows he can admit when he is wrong.
When the pirates try to take control, Trelawney, Dr. Livesey, and their loyal crew members fight back. They defeat the pirates who stayed on the ship. They then go ashore and move into a strong, empty fort. In the end, the pirates are defeated. The treasure is shared among Trelawney and his loyal men. They return to England, leaving the remaining pirates on the island.
Squire Trelawney is a well-traveled man. He is also the best shot among the loyal crew. He shows good leadership skills and stays calm during the adventure.
