Jefferson Airplane was a famous rock band from San Francisco, California. They were one of the first bands to play a style of music called psychedelic rock. This type of music often tried to sound like a dream or a trip, using special effects and sounds.
The band started in 1965. They helped create the "San Francisco Sound", which was a unique music style from the Bay Area. Jefferson Airplane was the first band from that area to become famous around the world. They were also main performers at some of the biggest rock festivals in the 1960s. These included the Monterey (1967), Woodstock (1969), and Altamont (1969) festivals in the United States. They also played at the first Isle of Wight Festival (1968) in England.
Their album Surrealistic Pillow, released in 1967, was very important during the "Summer of Love". The Summer of Love was a time in 1967 when many young people gathered in San Francisco. They shared ideas about peace, love, and music. Two popular songs from this album are "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit". These songs are considered some of the greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.
The most well-known members of Jefferson Airplane, from 1966 to 1970, were Marty Balin (vocals), Paul Kantner (guitar, vocals), Grace Slick (vocals), Jorma Kaukonen (lead guitar, vocals), Jack Casady (bass), and Spencer Dryden (drums). Marty Balin left the band in 1971. After 1972, the band essentially split into two new groups.
Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady focused on their band, Hot Tuna. Grace Slick, Paul Kantner, and other members formed a new band called Jefferson Starship in 1974. Marty Balin later joined them. Jefferson Airplane was honored in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. They also received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 for their lasting impact on music.
