The History of St. Aloysius Church
Starting the Parish in Sayler Park
The St. Aloysius church community began in 1868. At that time, German American Catholics from the area wanted a school for their children. They built a one-room schoolhouse for kids in Lower Delhi.
A church was built next to the school. It officially opened on June 29, 1873. Later, in 1885, the church bought land for a bigger building. This new church was dedicated on October 28, 1888.
Growth and Changes Over Time
In 1890, the old church building became the new school. Nuns from the Sisters of St. Francis of Oldenburg came to teach there. The school grew and even included high school grades. A house for the priest, called a rectory, was added in 1898.
The original one-room schoolhouse was taken down in 1905. A new school building opened on June 3, 1906. The first church building was also torn down in 1916. In 1923, the church's tall steeple, which was 150 feet high, had to be removed. The original rectory was also taken down.
Modern Updates and Recognition
During the 1930s, the high school grades at St. Aloysius were stopped. The church building itself was updated several times. These renovations happened in 1931, 1952, 1998, and 2001.
In the 2000s, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes were added to the school. In 2006, the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport helped the school. They paid for soundproof windows and air conditioning. This was part of a program to reduce noise from the airport.
On December 23, 2014, the church, school, and rectory were added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are important historical buildings. They were recognized for their special architecture in the local area. Sadly, the school closed on May 24, 2018, because fewer students were attending.
