History
The church has a long and interesting history. It has grown and changed over many years.
Starting Small
The parish of St. Aloysius began in 1868. German American Catholics from a nearby church wanted a school. They built a one-room schoolhouse for children in Lower Delhi. A church building was added next to it. This first church was officially opened on June 29, 1873.
Growing and Changing
In 1885, the church bought land for a new, bigger building. This new church was dedicated on October 28, 1888. The old church building then became the school in 1890. Sisters from the Sisters of St. Francis came to teach there. The school grew and even included high school grades for a while. A house for the priest, called a rectory, was added in 1898.
New Buildings and Updates
The original one-room schoolhouse was taken down in 1905. A new school building opened on June 3, 1906. The first church building was also taken down in 1916. In 1923, the church's tall steeple, which was 150 feet high, had to be removed. The original rectory was also taken down that year.
The high school grades at the school ended in the 1930s. The church building itself was updated several times. It was renovated in 1931, 1952, 1998, and 2001.
A Historic Landmark
In the 2000s, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes were added to the school. In 2006, the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport helped the school. They paid for soundproof windows and air conditioning. This was part of a program to reduce noise from the airport. They also lowered the ceilings inside the school.
On December 23, 2014, the church, school, and rectory were recognized as very important. All four buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places. This was because of their special architecture in the local area. The school, however, closed on May 24, 2018. This happened because fewer students were enrolling.
